Linux Mint Gloria on Toshiba A100
Hello not sure if this is the right place to post this - please move to right location if its in the wrong place. (I don't want to redo this again!)
Here are the main issues and experience about Linux Mint Gloria on Toshiba A100:
99% works out of the box.
Some issues experience from time to time: 1. When plugging in DC power - if using LAN cable, the LAN connection will be lost sometimes 2. Hibernation mode does not work well - it works but sometimes coming out of hibernation there are error messages and reboot may occur instead of un-hibernating 3. Using VPN software - cannot use together with hibernation - it totally doesn't know what's going on 4. Wine - it's drunk but some apps work - but IE 6 will not work or load - followed all the blogs and message boards to no avail 5. Entering passwords in Firefox - the boxes are greyed out on some sites - this is a big problem (that's why I was trying to install IE6 in Wine) other browsers - same result 6. Skype - some issues even with the latest 2.1 version - the sound quality is like a bad quality MP3 format - maybe there are settings to improve audio settings 7. Microphone settings: have to make sure its not set to high on the bottom right hand screen otherwise you will have screeching sounds - mine is set to 50% - this arrangement seems primitive
Some pleasant surprises:
1. Nvidia X server is great - can connect to 40" LCD TV via VGA out
2. USB hard drive - can read NTFS files no problem - can also import NTFS AVI or other formats and can edit in Kino
where some blogs etc say this is not possible yet!
3. Connecting to local network is no problem via smb - can transfer files/ folders both ways
4. Printing is easy via network
5. Scanner recognition without additional drivers
6. Plugging in my mobile via USB - able to get 3G connection - 2MBS sometimes/ and get Edge connection in China via China Mobile (using Nokia 5800)
7. Thunderbird via IMAP works great
Some things not tried yet 1. Linux sampler and Rosegarden to replace Cakewalk Sonar and Gigastudio - since i now know that Linux Mint can read & edit NTFS formated files - I think there will not be an issue with streaming .gig files from my USB HDD which has 100GB of .gig files in NTFS format
Some things need: 1. easy conversion from cakewalk file format to rosegarden or other format 2. Linux sampler - ability to read gigastudio .gsp files (that's collection of instrument files used for a specific composition when using gigastudio in windows) 3. Bluetooth - although Bluetooth works well for file tranfer to mobile device - as yet I haven't found a way to connect to the internet - using *99# like you can in windows - its not a real issue but would be nice to have just in case i forgot to bring the USB cable!
