Bianca KDE Edition

BETA 020 was released on the 5th of April. Our mirrors counted approximately 15,000 downloads and a lot of people posted their suggestions and feedback on the forums. The results are encouraging and the KDE Edition proved to be very popular.

A list of bugs has been published here:

A vote was organized in the forums to know whether the KDE Edition should fit on a CD or a DVD. The community was divided on the question and as a result the final release will come as a DVD... but a cut-down version will also be available for download. The cut-down version will fit on the CD and will miss some applications.

The stable release is planned for the 20/04/2007.

Bianca Light Edition

Bianca Light Edition was released on the 29/03/2007. Although it was downloaded by only 1,500 people it received good feedback and it should be included as a cover CD in this month's issue of the "Linux User and Developer" magazine:

mintArt

Only 4 logos are still in competition and the mintArt project is now working at improving them and rendering them on different backgrounds and in different sizes. The project, lead by Carlos and NikSavel is getting organized on the Community Portal and it will be hosted on linuxmint.com. Community contributed art and files are being gathered and a gallery should soon be made available.

Development

The development team got bigger:

  • Lars-Peter Clausen joined the mintMenu development team and brought significant improvements to it. The new mintMenu 2.0 was released today and will be made available in Romeo and Cassandra. It now features icons on the categories and a configurable mouse over delay, making it one of the best Gnome menus available at the moment.
  • Will Morrel, who originally developped the Sony Brightness Control now participates in the development of mintBrightness, a Gnome applet which allows to change the screen brightness level on Sony, IBM, Panasonic, HP Omnibook, Asus and Toshiba laptops.
  • Fred (BlahBlahX) is working at making an XFCE variant of Cassandra. It is still unclear whether this will be a Linux Mint edition or another distribution based on Linux Mint.
  • Minter_dk has started porting various mint applications under KDE. He should soon release a KDE version of mintDisk. He's also working at a text-based installer. If things go well this installer could be included in Cassandra and the user would be able to choose between a live session with a graphical installer (as it is now) and a text-based install, from the same CD.
  • Clem is currently working on an alternative to CNR called mintInstall which should be included in Cassandra.

Statistics

  • All editions cumulated, 7 mirrors were made available for Bianca. 3 of them counted 592,950 downloads. The total number of downloads is unknown.
  • Linux Mint made it to the top 10 in the distrowatch ranking. Although the ranking is only an indicator of the popularity of a distribution and doesn't necessarily reflect the size of the user base, this is a significant achievement for Linux Mint: http://www.distrowatch.com
  • 47% of linuxmint.com visitors are from the USA. Next are Germany with 6%, France with 4% and the UK with 3%. Europe itself represents 36%.
