Introduction

Welcome to the Linux Mint Newsletter. Here is what happened last week.

News

Linux Mint

  • Work is going on and soon the KDE Community edition will be ready to go gold. It has been much harder to get the Mint specials to work under KDE than ever expected, and Boo has also tried to fix some "oddities" in KDE.
  • Mint is doing very well. To increase the income from advertising the latest release of Mint Firefox has a "Google tweak" that will bring more funds to Mint. You can read about it here [1] This unfortunately makes at least some of the "Google specials" a bit harder to reach, which is not appreciated by everyone. We understand that, but the gains from the "new arrangement" are so important that we hope you can accept our choice (and make a bookmark for your page with "Google specials") Anyone not using them will have no difficulties. More information will come in the blog

Linux and other Distributions

  • Ubuntu Developer Week will go on February 18 - 22 [2]
  • Major Linux security hole found [3] This does not affect Mint though. The whole is there from kernel 2.6.17 all the way up to 2.6.24.1. It can however only be exploited from 2.6.23 onwards and Mint has 2.6.22. //Edit tuesday/It seems that this was not correct and Mint is vulnerable. There are updates in mintUpdate// More here [4]
  • A Swedish web hosting company ditches Linux for a more safe system... [5] (Link in Swedish) The first time the editor sees that. But if you do it the wrong way any operating system is insecure.. Just mentioned this in conjunction with the kernel "hole" to remind you that even Linux has its problems.

IT & Open Source

  • Top 50 Proprietary apps and their Open Source Alternatives [6]
  • Sun buys Innotek, the company that makes Virtualbox [7]
  • SCO gets more money, continues their fight against IBM and Linux [8] In the last weeks there has been a large number of businesses buying or joining other businesses in IT.
