Back to normal

The holiday season is over for this time and most of us will be back in the daily routine.
We hope you all had a wonderful time
And in spite of the holiday season there are lots of news from Mint

Releases

A very promising Fluxbox Commuity Edition has been released [3]
We have released a Debian Alpha [4]
Mint never releases an Alpha, unless we want to show off something special and an Alpha will never be developed into a Final Release.
The Debian Alpha is made to show that Mint can be based on something else than Ubuntu, and also how fast Debian is.
We do not intend to change our base from Ubuntu.
We have also released the tool mintBackup, which is to be included in Mint 5 [5]
The KDE Commuity Edition is almost ready to be released as a second beta. It turns out to be harder than expected to port the Mint tools (that were made for Gnome) to KDE
The same goes for XFCE, but this edition will release later.
The E17 Community Edition will be released in January as a beta [6]
The edition has a blog of it's own [7]
The mini CD edition will probably also be released as beta in January
The Fedora and 64 bit testing editions are postponed until after the release of Mint 5

M.I.N.T. (Mint Is Not auTomatix)

Clem has an excellent post in the blog about what Mint is - titled as above [10]
Mint is much more than codecs and/or Automatix on top of Ubuntu. To show this is also a reason for the Debian alpha
If you have not used Mint yet, try it and see how easy it is to use, much due to the many Mint tools

New team member

"exploder" is to become Release Manager
If you've spent some time in the forums looking at the posts for bugs you will know that exploder is really good at finding them
He will now do that as a team member and check releases before they go public.
We do have a strict quality standard, but to have someone that's not a developer make a test before release will help in getting our releases even better

Linux

A new version of envy has been released [11]

Editors comment

It's not easy to keep track of the rapid development in the computer world.
If you feel something is left out in the newsletter send a PM to husse in the forum and it may be included in the next edition

A note on numbering

Clem felt that it's better to continue the numbering from 2007 than to use a year + edition numbering so I'll do that in the future
