Linux Mint 3.1 Celena Upgrade Instructions

Post by clem »

Hi,

If you want to upgrade Cassandra, Celena BETA 017 or Celena BETA 021 to Celena stable, please follow the instructions contained in this PDF document:

Clem, Thanks for the instructions, but it seems like a lot to do. What if I do a clean install, but have my programs saved on a partition or something like that. Cassandra works so well I wonder if its worth the upgrade at this point.

I was on beta 0.17, did an update in apt-get earlier, all those packages were included and installed fine, no system problems either.... I don't see anything in that pdf that hasn't been done by an update...
If I'm running Cassandra I wouldn't be able to that would I? I don't mind saving some data on a CD and do a clean install of Celena. Is there much of a difference between the two?

Hi Cor,

It seems to be a typo. The correct link is:

I guess I did it wrong (but it worked). Because of the excellent tutorial in the Wiki, I partitioned my hard drive with a root, swap, and home partition. I then installed Celena making sure it didn't reformat my home partition (but I did have it backed up just in case) and it worked just fine. Celena is now installed and my home partition was unmolested :)

I actually noticed more than one typo on these instructions, got a couple of 404s. Just to let you know.

Disregard that - I was using Firefox's apparently completely ****ing useless PDF Download extension to view the PDF in HTML format, which seems to arbitrarily erase characters from text. I'm now following the PDF instructions in PDF format.

OK the instructions from the PDF file (in PDF format - very important, kids ;)) appeared to have worked fine. One suggestion I'd like to make though, is that regarding the upgrade instruction for Celena 017 to Mint 3.1, at the end, where it reads:
Open a terminal and type:

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/gnomeaboutme.desktop
In the end of the file, append the following line:

Code: Select all

NoDisplay=true
Then type:

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/gdm/gdm.confcustom
And replace the following line:

Code: Select all

SoundOnLoginFile=/usr/share/sounds/pidgin/alert.wav
with:

Code: Select all

SoundOnLoginFile=/usr/share/sounds/purple/alert.wav
You should perhaps include the instructions to "save and close" these two files. Seems redundant, I know, but to a newbie it might save them a little confusion.

In any event, I'm really happy with 3.1 - great job!

eventually, will the new mintArtwork be released as its own packages (so that I can get the new art without having to do a fresh install?)

because I'm liking the celena upgrade so far...but...I still have all the cassandra art.

Since I didn't have a lot to save I did a clean install of Celena, everything works fine except now my monitor settings of 1440x900 are too tall for the screen! If was fine in Cassandra, why would it change in Celena? Unfortunately my Viewsonic VA1912wb monitor can't adjust the height so I have to scroll up a down to see the toll bar. I reinstalled Nvidia drivers vis Envy then went to nvidia-settings but nothing works. I may have to go back to Cassandra or use PCLOS in the other hdd. :(

I also did a clean installation last night. I had to manually edit my xorg.conf as I use TwinView with various meta modes.

Can you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file so we can look at it? Do you only use one monitor at 1440x900?

I haven't ever used Xorg before. Is there a command to help adjust my screen?
I only use one monitor. Thanks

Please note: you should backup your xorg.conf file first (even though it doesn't work as you want it to). Also it is difficult for me to give the correct resolution as I do not use a widescreen monitor :(

Stretch. your a genius! Changing that line in the xorg.conf file did the trick. It needed a 1440x900 listing for the monitor to set properly.

Thank you :)

You are most welcome vinoman. :wink:

It's about time I gave something back to other users, after all the leeching I have done over the years :D

Glad you got it sorted.

I also have a 1440x900 widescreen monitor and I've noticed that GDM doesn't always display properly. To fix that and to always ensure you're desktop doesn't extend beyond the boundaries of your monitor, modify the following lines:

DefaultDepth 24
Option "metamodes" "1440x900 +0+0; 1280x960 +0+0; 1152x864 +0+0; 1024x768 +0+0; 832x624 +0+0; 800x600 +0+0; 720x400 +0+0; 640x480 +0+0"
Virtual 1440 900
SubSection "Display"

Notice there's purposely no "x" between 1440 and 900!

On a separate topic, why has there been a big brouhaha over the 'about me' Gnome applet? It worked fine for me with the BETA 017 and still works fine after upgrading to final (skipping the instructions to disable it.) Is there some problem with it that I should be aware of, or can I keep it? Thanks for a wonderful release!

It was missing some dependencies but if you have it working (you probably got evolution or its data package installed somehow) then you're fine.

I followed the instructions in the PF manual, but usplash and wallpaper are still Cassandra's. No Celena artwork in /usr/share/backgrounds. I downloaded usplash-theme-celena from mint repo, to no avail.
No menus entries for mintUpload and mintwifi, I only know that all mint's packages were correctly downloaded looking at Synaptic. The only new entry is for APTonCD.
Did I something wrong?

Cheers

There was no package for the wallpaper and the uslpash has to be configured so the system uses it.
mintUpload and mintWifi are not suppose to be in the menu.
Mintupload should be in the menu when you right click on a file.(3.7 Setup mintupload)
MintWifi is used in terminal.
It looks like you have done everything from the pdf correct.
