Trouble with a Matrox G400 32 MB with a Daytek 1501/BA1-MPR

Post by glaframb »

Hi,

I have trouble using Linux Mint Bianca with my desktop computer which uses a Matrox G400 video card with 32 MB of SGRAM and an 15 inches Daytek 1501/BA1-MPR monitor, To work aroud this problem, i use

The command : dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg in a terminal mode. Is it possible to fix this bug within the next release of Linux-Mint so my hardware recognition can be done automatically.

P.S. My Hardware works well with the Fedora distribution, the Mandriva distribution and the OpenSuse Distribution. Maybe those guys those distribution can inspire you.

Thank you !

I'm not sure but I think the G400 is a "mga" card. The driver is in synaptics (search for Matrox, just a handful of hits)
Could be that it's not installed or you should reinstall.
I'm not familiar with Matrox cards and drivers but I assume you get some "control center" for the settings and that you find that the settngs you make there is not reflected on your desktop.
You may have to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add the resolution(s) you want. That has helped on several occasions.

Please paste the contents of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
I may have some solution but I want to take a look at that file first

When I wrote the answer (the first time) the computer was frozen solid - I think it's the third time in Beryl now.
Anyway, your card is old and long since abandoned by Matrox and as far as I recall the G200, G400 had all sorts of problems from the beginning. You will see lots of tears cried over them if you search the internet.
Your xorg.conf looks ok, but there is more to it...
A lot of solutions will be found in this thread from the Ubuntu forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... e&t=326094
and follow the links there as well as reading the post.
The essential part of that is to run sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and then sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart but there is much more.
You will also have to install a better driver - but an unofficial one. you can get one here http://www.tuxx-home.at/ but there are other unofficial drivers available.
I try to stick with .deb and I'm not 100% sure but I think that "installer.run" packages are installed by first making them executable
chmod +x yyyy-installer.run
and then execute
sudo ./yyyy-installer.run

Resolution problem partially Fix

Post by glaframb »

Ok, i got now the correct resolution 1024x768 for my desktop! The only problem left is when i am starting Supertux 0.3.0. I see a black screen. Could this be a problem of resolution under 640x480.

What can i do to test all my resolution.

Thank you very much for your help Husse !

Did not even know what Supertux is :) (google says same kind of game)
Could this be a problem of resolution under 640x480.
I suppose you mean over not under
I don't know but it's well known that starting a game at the wrong resolution can give errors.
There should be some tool for Matrox settings I believe and games always(?) give you the opportunity to change some settings including resolution
