The ATI proprietary driver does not support composite extensions and will not work with Beryl/Compiz unless you install XGL as well. Or you could revert to the open-source ATI driver.
See here for instructions on running Beryl with the open-source ATI driver. You can skip the parts about installing beryl since you already have it. But follow the parts about getting the open-source driver configured correctly.

If you want to use the fglrx ATI proprietary driver with XGL, look here:

Generally the open-source driver is recommended.
