Welcome to Mint.

Mint by default is a gnome distro, you need to follow the attached link http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php and download Elyssa Main Edition. You will need to burn the downloaded file to a CD as a disc image and then load the CD and install from the live cd. If you need any further info please do not worry about posting further questions.

Type this in the terminal

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get gnome
or

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get gnome-desktop
Mint is based on Ubuntu, so the same commands should work. I also think if you go to the Package Manager in mintMenu you should be able to find KDE packages and install them from there. I'm still very new to Linux so correct me if this is not the way to do it.
It's

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gnome
and

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop
Alternatively go into synaptic and search for the Gnome meta-package and install that.

Why don't you just backup your data save to a DVD RW or send it to an email so you can get it later.

I also suggested saving your data in an email. Where you can retrieve it later.
Also you may think about a memory card or a USB flash drive.
Perhaps these ideas could help

I do not know if Gnome will work just because KDE works.
