Many thanks to you both. The upgrade solution works, the compatibility mode solution reported a failure to start the X server and offered diagnosis (which I didn't follow through with as I'd already managed an install and upgrade)

Hi all I find I can't install 17.3 (xfce) on my HP Compaq Mini 700 netbook. 17 live boot works fine but 17.3 (and current Xubuntu) gives a black screen instead of the mint logo just after the timeout. Open the terminal and type or paste
And reboot or log out and in
