ETA for a Mint 7 stable release?
I can see that’s the question on everybody’s lips right now.. “when is Mint 7 going to be released?”. You probably saw on twitter that LinuxMint-7-DEV-052.iso was approved by Exploder and that it passed all the tests… and yet, no sign of it in the mirrors and no announcements on the website 
I just want to ask the community for a little more patience. There’s very little left to do before the release but we can’t afford to skip any steps.
- LinuxMint-7-DEV-052.iso wasn’t fully tested by myself, and although it was maintained by me and approved by Exploder, I still want to make sure about a few things before I approve it myself.
- The Universal edition is going to be released at the same time as the Main edition, so that needs to get approved as well. I’m testing LinuxMint-7-Universal-DEV-007.iso right now. It looks good but I need to make sure it passes all the tests and that it’s easily upgradable to a Main Edition with a single click of the mouse.
- The User Guide needs to be updated and that will take a day or two.
- Once everything is fine, it will take up to 48 hours for the ISOs to propagate on the download mirrors.
After that, we’ll be ready for a release.
The upgrade path from Mint 7 RC1 is working fine. The upgrade path from Mint 6 will need to be tested and the upgrader will eventually need to be updated. This won’t hold the release though and we’ll make an announcement for Mint 6 users a few days after the release.
Please be patient and my apologies for the time this is taking.

brandon, um it runs on ubuntu 9.04. if you’re complaining about a problem with ubuntu, you are barking up the wrong tree.
i have found mint 7 rc to be very stable. also it fixed a couple of the problems i had been having with mint 6, most notably support for digital cameras. with mint 6 as well as ubuntu 8.1 i was unable to get any digital camera to work thru usb, i would have to go to a windows computer. now with mint 7 that is all fixed, it pops up and asks me what to do with all these pictures.

We looked at different ways to address the Intel issue but there is no single fix that works for all Intel graphics cards. I have Intel graphics on my main machine! I used the “safe” method listed in the Ubuntu forum to correct the problem on my machine. I did test all three methods on a fresh install before deciding which was best for my particular system. The problem comes from the Ubuntu 9.04 base itself.

Is it too late to ask you to include an easy to find dial up modem dialer? The Chestnut program found in LM 5 Fluxbox would be great! That’s what I run now on two boxes and love same!
Also, because these distros are so well made, I’ve had zero experience at the terminal “command line” I’d like to learn something there even though I haven’t needed it to install and use Mint. Can anyone recommend a website or other free resource for an absolute beginner at the Linux command line?
I apologize if these questions are not a fit for this area, just trying to save time

I’m very new to Linux and have installed Mint 6 and it’s running great. If I want to upgrade to version 7, will I have to do a fresh install, or will I be able to “upgrade” it? If I can upgrade, will it require me to open a terminal and enter code/commands, or will there be an “idiot” upgrade version for idiots like me

I recently tried Mint for the first time (7 RC1) and I have to say I was very impressed. I have tried most of the major distros and I would say that Mint is the most polished of them all. It’s easy to use for a first timer and it’s one that might possibly convince me to make the switch from Windows to Linux on my main machine full time.
I do prefer KDE to Gnome however and was wondering how long (just approximately) after mint 7 is released will it take for the community KDE version to be released?

@Joe: Linux Mint 7 should have some preformence increases, mainly due to its Ubuntu 9.04 base, which has faster boot times, and from personal experience it seems much more snappy then 8.10. So Mint 7 should follow that trend. And I’m surprised that your drive is fragmented, Linux drives generally don’t fragment… What filesystem are you using, because as far as I know ext3 (the default filesystem in Mint) has built in fragment protection…

Will this release actually be distinctive from Ubuntu? I liked the mintMenu that is in Elyssa, but when this was removed in the current version, I might as well just be using Ubuntu. The only practical benefit is that Mint makes it slightly easier to install proprietary drivers.

Cool Beans, heading over to my Fathers next week. It’ll be just the right time so I can upgrade his computer.
As to the wait, I’m perfectly happy to wait until they have classified it as stable. Fixing bug’s pre-release is not only preferred but much easier than fix post release.
BTW been running RC1 since it’s release, very happy with it and so far no problems. Well that is other than the Intel HD sound not working on one box, but that’s an upstream issue.

ext3 can become fragmented. The backend of the filesystem does combat and successfully solve most fragmentation issues, but it has problems with large files. I’ve never had “large” defined for me, but I’ve seen up to 20% fragmentation on my ext3 drives without affecting performance (not that I could tell with the naked eye, anyways).

Are there fixed time frames for KDE releases or is it as you are able to do it.
I not complaining but it does seem that the KDE release comes out just in time for the next Main version to be released. Which may mean that the v.7 KDE will come out right before v.8 GNOME? I know it takes a while to put together the KDE. But I am holding off on the v.6KDE do to the fact that it is built off KDE4 and not KDE4.2

Why are we like that? I complain about my daughter who needs the latest t-shirt, the newest cellphone, Windows 7, and eats pizza where the rest of the crowd eat their pizzas… One day, a week, 6 months won’t make big difference to our lives. i have a question, i have mint 6 and what i like about it is that i can move the panel from the bottom of the screen to the top of the screen, but when i tried the mint 7 RC1 i was not able to move the panel at all, when mint 7 is released will i be able to move the panel?, as i like it on the top of the screen.

I’ve tested the Mint 7 rc1 on another hdd of mine. Looks great. Sounds great. Smells great. Feels great.
(nvidia driver 180 giving bugs anyway, that’s all trouble I’ve been through)…
But still I’m glued on my Mint 6 64 bits. This distro is SOOOO cool I’ll wait patiently ’till the release of her greater sister n°7 in its 64 bits edition.
Cause I guess there’ll be one 64 bits, won’t it be Clem???

I’ve been using RC1 on both my laptop and my desktop and this is the first time that I’ve let gparted take the hours upon hours needed to shift my data over for a permanent linux partition on each machine.
Honestly, linux never lasts more than a week installed because of the whole gaming/directx thing and while it’s still not where I’d like it to be in terms of speed and compatibility with Windows games Linux Mint is a beautiful thing and well worth the 8ish hours I spent shifting partitions.

This version (rc1) is very stable and easy installation ( no problem except for nvidia driver: ther right choice is the second n 96).

My colleague at work had a fedora 8 desktop which was having graphics trouble, and our corporate IT guys don’t really support linux, so he was out of luck. Last week we said screw it, wiped his box clean and installed Mint6 ourselves, and he was blown out of the water. Were anxiously awaiting 7.
His newly-minted box connects to the company network just fine without IT intervention, thank you very much, and better yet, he can update it and do whatever he wants without begging IT to give temporary root permission, as was the case before. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take that IT! Power to the workers!

Regarding Intel drivers, I think you guys shouldn’t look too strict to the Ubuntu base you’re building Mint upon. If there’s anything you can fix by some tweaks I see no reason why not pushing that to the BIG guy. After all, Ubuntu does that to Debian so you can be Ubuntu’s sidekick just as the other is to its foundation. 
You did get far and whatever you do to fix some stuff it’s already obvious many users will appreciate.
Maybe drivers should only be activated based on detection. This would allow the system to get lighter. At least I know I kill the bluetooth stuff right away from every desktop installation. I just don’t need it and it takes up some resources. If detection can’t be done for this and that, at least a Mint Services control panel would be welcome and the scripts behind its back could nicely deactivate stuff like bluetooth in a manner that will easily allow reactivation if that’s later needed.
Another thing that would be great on Linut Mint is “compatibility with other people”. Compatibility is very tied up with communication and that includes a text messenger, audio and video chat. People are divided up with such stuff so we should all take a better look at what people use these days and get them Linux alternatives where native solutions aren’t there.
This is especially the case of Yahoo Messenger – which is quite popular around the world but they even withdrew their Linux client. After a quick search I found Gyachi (http://gyachi.sourceforge.net/), which has voice and video support at some level, which I tested in an Elyssa live cd a few minutes ago. Whatever we could do to enhance compatibility/collaboration we should prioritize for future versions and people will be happy to answer your questions inside the forums.
Yet another cool thing about the future would be making the geeks happier. I am not necessarily thinking about the ones who compile all day long or write their code, but the people that got over the beginner status and enjoy digging into more complicated stuff. For these people there should be a certain section on the Universal Edition that includes guest additions for VM software, a few alternative editors for development/other purposes and some recovery tools.
For the multi-boot users there is something that would be greatly appreciated if you would pull it off. An automated MBR fixer or an easy wizard to replace automatics would be the savior of many people who want to play with Mint but don’t have the necessary skills to recover from a Windows reinstall that wiped the Linux boot loader. Add this to your plans and get ready to have worshipers.
As I suggested in another blog post, it would be nice if you would also offer a few scripts in an integrated interface (maybe MintInstall) that would allow the users to get the latest versions of highly popular software like OpenOffice.org. I recently removed my 2.4 from my Mint and manually installed OOo.org v3.1 (it has anti-aliased graphics + much more nice stuff). Everything works well – it’s just I don’t have the Minty splash screens on OOo anymore but I enjoy the new features very much. It’s not a single case and you shouldn’t do this for a gazillion packages but only the most popular, that people need to replace their Windows stuff with Linux applications. (Even more worshipers…
)

I agree with kneekoo. That last suggestion would be very useful. There’s a significant delay between the last “stable” software is released and it’s introduction in the official repos. I’d enjoy a separated session on my Mintupdate to display the new update for my main applications (featuring screenpictures like in mintinstall); the packages list often feels to messy for me to dig on it each of the not-so-safe updates… I usually don’t want all level 3 updates installed, so I tend to leave them unchecked, and I’d say that’s the same for most of people.

@Vinicius: I like to update my system with all level-1-2-3 packages. At least the level-3 ones should be good enough not to break anything in Mint, but for the best stability I agree with you that only level 1+2 are worth the effort.
@joe: The convenience is important to a lot of people – even to those who can actually compile LXDE – like I did. It simply saves time. Anyway, my point was that it would be very nice if a few very popular applications would have custom install scripts so people can click and install. We don’t actually need an army of software at hand but simply what we mostly use and need updates for. I’m sure people would even donate for such scripts and their official testing.

Congratulation, guys! I have just performed an Mint 7 install by choosing to install it right from the boot menu. It took about 6 minutes to copy all the files in VirtualBox 2.2.2 (WinXP SP3) and I’ll make some other tests later today.

There is a bug that comes from Ubuntu Jaunty and is related to the Intel Graphics Card. It doesn’t enable the desktop effects.
The problem is in the new kernel. See link:

This is all great, but how soon after the final release will there be a 64bit release.. and are there plans for a CE release of kde 4.2.3 64bit? or will it just be 32bit kde CE?

I love Linux mint over ubuntu and i want to say thanks for all your continuing hard work for an awesome linux distro! One thing i find interesting is how stable mint is than ubuntu in terms of live cd. And mint just works, even in beta form.

I’ve played a little with the Mint 7 live CD and apparently the latest MintMenu needs some tweaking. It feels a little unresponsive. I clicked OpenOffice.org Writer in the menu and the menu stayed there until the application started. Of course, I have clicked the menu entry several times, thinking I must’ve done something wrong that the menu doesn’t close back but after the first OOo session started I got a whole bunch of other Writer windows – then the menu closed.
This happened on the live CD, on a Prescott 2.8 GHz with 1 GB of RAM – so the performance should be more than enough for an operation that happens normally in the previous versions. However, I could not reproduce that behavior in my installed copy of Mint 7 (on my other machine – Core 2 Duo E6320 with 2 GB of RAM) so I rebooted my VM and started a live CD session. Nothing weird about the menu. I don’t know what happened on my first machine but I guess it could happen to someone else so I reported it in here.
Overall… I must say I’m very impressed with the latest version. I just love it.

I’ve been using Mint for some time now, and I’ve found it to be the most ‘complete’ Linux distro of them all. I do however, try each new Ubuntu release, mainly for comparison, but ultimately, Mint always improves on what Ubuntu has to offer. So now, having tried Ubuntu 9.04, which is pretty awesome in itself, I can’t wait for the new version of Mint.
I will have to be patient I know, as I’m a dedicates x64 user, but I’m convinced that I won’t be at all disappointed.
Not only do I find that using Mint is a productive experience, but it is fun, and very rewarding too. As a relative newbie to Linux, after too many years using ‘other’ operating systems, this is a wonderful, new phase in my life, and I’m sure that the new release is going to enhance it even further!
I’d like to take the opportunity to give thanks to everyone working on this great distro. I’m sure that there are countless others that share my views too.

As you guys can see, it is possible that the official announcement can come today or tomorrow, because the user guide is not yet published. Given the fact that the last two days were actually a weekend, I’m not surprised we have to wait for the official launch. They deserve some rest after the hard work so while I have already enjoyed myself with the latest Mint I can now easily give then slack.
After all it’s Mint 7 we were all waiting for, not an official statement. 
Oh… and if it turns out the final release is yet to be published and we, the agitated people, downloaded a release candidate, then what else can I say that we will have even more joy with a more stable ISO? Either way, I’m already happy!

Drawing the conclusion from the following article, the most home workstations won’t need any defragmentation.

Read the last two paragraphs for an alternate method to defragmentation. On short, make an archive of your fragmented files, delete the originals, then put everything back from the archive. Anyway, this is only worth for mail servers or people using p2p file sharing frequently.
If you keep at least 10%-15% free space on your HDD, at all time, then you won’t suffer of fragmentation too soon because linux file systems normally use free space blocks to write files to avoid fragmentation.

I tested the live CD on my E7221 server board with integrated video and it looked very good + the effects were enabled by default. I didn’t try it on my other system, with GMA 3000 but I suspect it will be even better. I’m still working on something right now but I’m tempted to reboot and see for myself.
Anyway, give it a test yourself. I think it will work pretty nice – at least I hope so.

Yes Dread Knight, with GMA965 and X3100 it still sucks a little bit, but I think it will be better with the next upgrades.
With some tricks ad a bit of luck you can make your GMA to work!

@Dread Knight: I just tested my Mint 7 live CD on my Intel GMA 3000 and it works excellent. Actually, I’m writing this from the live CD.

876 frames in 5.0 seconds = 175.094 FPS
871 frames in 5.0 seconds = 174.080 FPS
The test above was performed on 1440×900 pixels, at 60 Hz. I think it’s just great.
I’ll install a game from the internet – maybe a 3D shooter and see how it behaves. I hope my 2 GB of RAM will handle that.

Well… I downloaded Alien Arena and tried to play it. It sucks pretty badly. I don’t know if it’s a live CD issue or the game simply requires a more advanced graphics card.
Then I removed Alien Arena and tried Nexuiz. Remember I’m still on a live CD session and Alien Arena has more than 500 MB of files (unpacked) and Nexuiz has more than 350 MB. Nexuiz runs smoother so I guess the other game is very demanding. However, there is a weird flicker in a rectangle area on the left of the screen that I first suspected was Alien Arena’s fault but the same happened in Nexuiz. I guess there is a bug in Intel’s driver but so far I only noticed it in these two games. Desktop animations are performing as they should.
Next, I installed Open Arena – after I removed Nexuiz so I can still be able to work in my RAM. Open Arena is also very big. I tried it at different resolutions and I had the same issue with the rectangular area continuously flickering but then I switched to 1440×900 and everything was fine. All details on, high level on everything and it worked quite well. Now that I uninstalled the other two games I feel sorry I didn’t test 1440×900 on them as well – at least in Nexuiz.
Then I switched Mint to 1152×864 and tried to play Open Arena on Mint’s resolution – AFTER I deleted the former configuration file, so the game can auto-detect the settings. I did the same for 832×624.
I can now safely say the driver has some issues but playing them at Mint’s resolution everything will be fine.

I downloaded Gloria from heanet and installed on my notebook ATI RADEON, AMD Turion 64×2. Everything was recognized by default.
It`s awesome! It boot faster than Felicia. I spend the whole day play around with Gloria and configuring the way I like it.
No bugs. The best Linux I ever tried so far.

Well… I just had a surprise. Nexuiz works great now. Apparently the out-of-the-box resolution had something to do with the games I started. After playing around so much with the resolutions Nexuiz behave normally – even asking for the latest version.
Alien Arena, on the other hand, even if it doesn’t flicker anymore, is still working like crap on GMA 3000, even it I set 1024×768 on medium details. It’s a good thing I don’t like Alien Arena, right?
That’s it for me. Enough testing.

After last upgrade RC1 (to stable version?) i have problem with Synaptic. I pushed the menu button of the Software Sources menu entry and nothing happened.

Hello, I now install Mint 7 Gloria from /pub/linuxmint/stable/7/ and when I try to play some movies in gnome player or mplayer I discover a bug or something like that. When I try to fullscreen a movie size of the movie is the same as before fullscreen. It put a black lines around a movie and size is same as without fullscreen. Have somebody the same problem or it is only in my Mint 7 installation?

well, i have started the download, it would take me say good 7-8 hrs before i get the iso from the xxx/stable/7/linuxmint-7.iso (20-May-2009), i am worried if the one i am downloading will be different from the announce one, whenever it is. it would be too much of effort wasted.
and even worse, i have lost my patience to wait any further, but then again i donot have any choice i have to wait. if this will be different from the main one.
