User Guide – Mint 5

The User Guide for Linux Mint 5 Elyssa is now available on the Firefox start page and for direct download at http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/5/user-guide/EN-v1.pdf

I’ve been very busy with the release of Linux Mint 5 and fixing some of the bugs found in Hardy/Elyssa prooved to be quite challenging so the scope was reduced for this guide and some of the additions I planned for it were cancelled. The guide is therefore an adaptation of the Linux Mint 4 User Guide and covers a few new features that were developped for this release.

To translate this guide into another language, download the ODT source from here: http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/5/user-guide/EN-v1-SRC.odt

Happy reading everyone! πŸ™‚

As we “revise” the stable release in a few month to incorporate new updates and improvements we’ll also revise this guide an incrementally add new content to it. Among the topics which weren’t addressed are PulseAudio, the Firefox search plugin and mintWifi.

  1. As we β€œrevise” the stable release in a few month

I am very scared by this line. Does this mean we still have to wait few months for a stable release.

Clem please come in and confirm this

  2. Mir Nazim: No, the stable release will be out pretty soon. But every now and then we’ll update it. It’s going to be there for 3 years so we’ll keep it up to date the best we can.

  3. I’m very impressed with the User Guide, explains things very succinctly for the new user. The new treatment of the partitioning stage is excellent and should remove much of the previous confusion experienced by many ‘newbies’. My only criticism is directed to setting up an account where it is recommendation to use ones Real Name. From a security point of view, this is not good practice if it can be avoided. The rest of the Guide is excellent and congratulations to those who put it together.

From a security point of view, I NEVER EVER use my real name or allow any personal information to be stored on any of my ‘internet accessible’ computers. While Linux is presently less likely to be compromised than ‘non Linux’ Operating Systems, the day may come where this will change. Therefore, any help afforded such a miscreant to defraud you should be Zero or nearly so.

Looking forward to the main release in due course.

    Great work Guys!!!

    Griz.

  4. Thanks for the clarification Clem. You guys simply rock. Mint really has a great potential of becoming the linux for the end users.

    Keep it up.

  5. By the way any rough idea when we can have a stable release.(Just asking, while fully understanding the hard work being put in it πŸ™‚ ).

  6. Clem and the team, you guys have done a great job on mint 5 keep up the good work and really looking forward to the stable release.

  7. My two (or three) cents for the next version:
    1. Don’t talk about dual-boot until the second paragraph
    2. Say a little more about Ubuntu and Mint’s relation to it
    3. Number or letter the section headers

  8. great os, best by far, will you make where it can be persistent on usb drive, like fedora 9. they have made the persistent usb install as simple as it gets for us newbies πŸ™‚
