LMDE: Wrong ISO file in download mirrors

Description of the problem:

Linux Mint Debian (LMDE) was approved for a stable release yesterday and an ISO made its way towards our download mirrors. As we were ready to make the announcements, a bug was spotted and a decision is now being made to re-spin a new ISO for this release.

We’re in the process of re-spinning a new ISO file. The ISO that is currently available in some of our download mirrors isn’t the correct one.

Information about the bug:

It’s still unclear what causes this bug, and why it wasn’t detected by the three testers (including myself) who worked on this ISO. The last step of the installation cleans APT by performing a call to “dpkg –configure -a”. This step hangs the installer and consequently the user needs to force-kill the installer and is faced with a dialog asking him/her to run “dpkg –configure -a” the first time he/she launches mintUpdate or Synaptic. Once this is done, the system acts normally. The installation itself, apart from not cleaning APT, isn’t impacted.

Information about the (wrong) ISO:

linuxmint-debian-201009-gnome-cd-i386.iso
md5sum: b1c7b0e2fb97dece42ee4db9016aff65

What to do if you downloaded this ISO:

If you successfully installed LMDE, you can start using it. Please throw the ISO and the DVD away though, and don’t re-distribute them to anybody.

What to do if you haven’t downloaded this ISO:

Wait for a few days and we’ll have everything ready for you. Our apologies for the delay and, though I still don’t understand how it did, for letting this bug go undetected.

Updates:

  • Apparently this bugs only affects installations using the en_US locale (this explains why it wasn’t detected by our 3 testers.. using en_IE, fr_FR, sv_SV and en_GB).
  • Another bug was found which affects hard drives on which there is no valid partition table.
  • Both bugs were fixed in preparation for the new ISO.

  1. Thank you for the warning. What’s a few more days, if what is offered is stable.
Many thanks to all the team for this work.

  2. So for you guys that have seen LMDE, is it similar in look and feel to Linux Mint Main? What is the desktop environment like?

  3. @mikhu It’s pritty much identical to the main edition except that a few components are missing like Plymuth and Jockey. Ubiquity isn’t the installer, instead a newly developed installer is used. It also has a lighter memory footprint than the Ubuntu based distros.

In general: Expect some rough edges and make bugreports of them.

  4. Grazie per il vostro lavoro a tutti voi.
E’ pronto un pc per questa LinuxMint che voglio assolutamente provare.
    Ancora grazie.

  5. This comment was written from a fresh LMDE installed in ro_RO. Everything was fine with the installation process, which was significantly faster than installing the traditional Linux Mint. 🙂 Thanks for that!

What’s not so obvious in the installer is how to manage the partitions. Just so everyone knows, you have to right-click the chose partition and assign them as root or home.

    Minor thing while applying updates:

apt-listchanges: Mainling root: apt-listchanges: news for mynewmint
    sh: /usr/sbin/sendmail: not found

Woudln’t it be better if sendmail would come preinstalled?

  6. Other stuff while updating:

Installing new version of /etc/init.d/checkroot.sh …
insserv: warning: script ‘K01mintsystem’ missing LSB tags and overrides
insserv: warning: script ‘mintsystem’ missing LSB tags and overrides

The above lines repeat 30 times in a row.

    Processing triggers for menu …

    Then this one:

    Processing triggers for gconf2 …

WARNING: Failed to parse default value `’ for schema (/schemas/desktop/gnome/f-spot/ui/main_window_y)

    Then mintUpdate asks:

Do you want to replace the configuration file “/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf”?

    // diff
    -COMPRESS=lzma
    +COMPRESS=gzip

    Then this one:

Installing new version of the configuration file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades
update-rd.d: warning: unattended-upgrades start runlevel arguments (none) do not match LSB Default-Start values (0 6)
update-rd.d: warning: unattended-upgrades stop runlevel arguments (0 6) do not match LSB Default-Start values (none)

It looks like the run levels are reversed.

The following come up _again_ every now and then during the update:

insserv: warning: script ‘K01mintsystem’ missing LSB tags and overrides
insserv: warning: script ‘mintsystem’ missing LSB tags and overrides

When I installed LMDE I didn’t specify a boot partition so now, with the update, a window popped up:

    Configure grub-pc
    GRUB install devices:

    /dev/sda (250059, ST3250410AS)
    – /dev/sda7 (18416 MB /)
    /dev/sdb (250059 MB, WDC_WD2500JB-22GVC0)

I ticked /dev/sda7 – my root partition – and the log displayed:

Removing update-grub hooks from /etc/kernel-img.conf in favour of /etc/kernel/ hooks.
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged..
    Installation finished. No error reported.

And with this… the update finished. I’ll reboot and see what happens. 🙂

  7. Restart successful. 🙂 Now I have two wishes:

    1. Name the ISO with -dvd- instead of -cd-
    2. Try updating the packages before rebuilding the ISO. I had to update 243 packages after I installed LMDE.

    Thanks, guys! 🙂

  8. No. The “right ISO” will be available in a few days, after the two fixes will be dealt with and the new ISO fully tested. It’s best to wait for the new ISO if you want to play safe.

  9. I’m using LMDE and all works fine!what i should do? I have to make a clean install when the new iso will came out, or I simply update via update manager??
(i’m testing the system on community website, search for Baerius)

  10. @Baerius: No problem. 🙂 It’s good your LMDE install works. Everything’s OK for me as well.

@Mint developers/Ikey: should I copy/paste the earlier posted reports in the appropriate forum thread or you have already taken note of them?

  11. I just installed LMDE over CrunchBang ( leaving home part. intact ). Install went fine. Could be because I picked Canada as location. 🙂
    Updating now

  12. I hope my wireless problem on my Asus Eee 1000H will be solved also. Have been waiting since the 9 version for this…….

  13. @Frits: I don’t think this Linux Mint test based on Debian is supposed to fix the problems you have in the main Mint distro.

  14. Huawei E160e 3G USB modem (which works flawlessly under Mint 9, using the option1 driver – works better than in Windows with the original driver) doesn’t connect to the Orange Romania network, although seems do be set up properly.
Also, upon booting into the live environment, in the pulseaudio’s configuration GUI, the soundcard’s default output was set to HDMI digital out, instead of analog out.
Haven’t tried to install it. Waiting for the right iso to hit the mirrors.
But boy, it’s certainly faster than the Ubuntu-based Mint.

  15. @clem,ikey, testers

please don’t hurry, take all the time you need to build an eyecandy stable release that works flawlessly and out of the box. after all, mint is know for that (kind of Mercedes-Benz of Linux distros), and we will love LMDE!

    keep the good work up!

  16. …….was approved for a stable release yesterday and an ISO made its way towards our download mirrors

Nice. As soon as the fixed ISO hit the mirrors, I’m gonna test that one immediately in VirtualBox. If all goes well, will test on another machine, dual boot with windows.

    I’ve been waiting for this.

Thanks to all the LMDE devs and supporters. 🙂

  17. This is the first release and is creating lots of expectations already. Knowing the quality of LM I’m sure LMDEB will be a sure winner. Is a KDE version on the works?

    Linux Mint really rocks!!!

  18. Wait, this is a stable release, as in the full, final release, and not a beta or RC? If so, that is amazing. When LM9 came out and there was the first serious mention of a Debian version, it sounded like it would be a long time before it would be very far along, and longer before it was stable and trustworthy. Clem & Crew surpass all expectations yet again!

You folks on the dev team are really beginning to spoil us! Thanks, and I can’t wait to so how this performs. I have a feeling it will be my go-to distro very soon.

  19. Well, i wouldn’t exactly call it “stable” at this point yet…It’s been kind of hit and miss…some have had just about no problems at all…and others some very serious problems…I found i couldn’t even run the live cd…everything came in fine, but then my mouse wasn’t able to click on any of the functions at all…

However, there are enough who have it running reasonably enough to give lots of feedback on various bugs being discovered, so they should help the Mint Team begin to “tame this beast” (lol)….and eventually get it up to “Mint Standards”…After it reaches that point, i know we all hope there will be both 32/64 bit gnome versions and 32/64 bit KDE versions…

I wish i could participate, but since it was a “no go” for me, i will have to just be a spectator on the side lines for now…

  20. To me, this seems more like an “alpha” at this point, which the mint team has decided to give community access to so that their input can help them get it under control…

if you try it, hope it works for you…but just wanted you to keep that in mind, so you don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t work quite right or at all for you at this point…Rest assured, between the community and the team, i have full faith they will get it to where it needs to be…

  21. A LiveCD session of linuxmint-debian-201009-gnome-dvd-i386.iso seemed to like my E5200 rig, with vlc 1.1.1 immediately available and working well, albeit at maximum screen resolution, with ‘Monitors’ not being able to select lower resolution to suit my deteriorating vision.
Added sound-juicer (aka Audio CD Extractor) found the requisite GStreamer plugins already installed, allowing 32-320K VBR modification so that it works rather well, but Exaile and AcidRip aren’t available.
Overall, In My Opinion it’s already looking better than Ubuntu 10.10 Beta, so more great work by the team.

  22. I was trying to write the image onto a 1GB partition of an 8GB USB stick, using Helena’s usb-creator-gtk, but I cannot open the downloaded copy of linuxmint-debian-201009-gnome-dvd-i386.iso (895.628M) as the input file. maverick-desktop-i386_0906.iso (710.158M) on the other hand can be used just fine.
Can anyone tell me why and how I can fix this?

  23. Hi really good idea. Couple of problems for me – Rythymbox crashes as soon as play selected. I use a creative xmod fine through Banshee but all web based sound eg LastFM and Grooveshark play through laptop speakers nit xmod.

    But thanks
